How do our numbers actually work?

In this delightful course, we’ll be exploring the incredible system that allows us to use just ten digits to make any number we can think of. We’ll discover how two-digit numbers are built and we’ll introduce one of the most important ideas in mathematics: place value.

What will your child learn?

• How our number system works: How we use just ten digits to make bigger numbers.
• An introduction to place value: We discover the tens and the ones, and how a digit’s position affects its value. 
• The names of the numbers: These aren’t always particularly intuitive in English. (Eleven and twelve? Why not oneteen and twoteen??) We explain it all!
• How to recognise and compare two-digit numbers: They’ll get plenty of practise to build their number sense through easy-to-understand explanations and fun games.

Who is this course for?

• Children that can count with confidence and are ready to build a solid understanding of place value and how it helps us to build numbers beyond 10.
• Children with dyscalculia or other learning differences who need extra support to progress from counting to understanding how our number system works.
• Children who are struggling with addition or subtraction, or who have difficulty ordering and comparing numbers. This may be a sign that they haven’t fully grasped place value.

We don’t like to put an age on our resources, because everyone advances at a different rate, but in terms of language comprehension, it’s suitable for around age 6 and upwards.

To get the most out of this course, we recommend that students have a good grasp of the single digit numbers and they are able to count objects, understanding that the numbers they are counting tell them how many of that object they have.

Which license is right for me?

Personal Use: This purchase includes a licence for use within one household. It can be used by multiple family members but it can only track one set of progress. If you would like to track progress individually, we recommend purchasing individual courses with different email addresses so that each student has their own login.

Classroom License: This purchase is for one teacher to use within a single classroom. Sharing outside of your classroom or uploading to public/shared drives or forums is not permitted.
